The Durham Diocese Counselling Service

This service provides counselling that is accessible, affordable and affirming of faith. It is for church members, clergy and their families living in the Durham Diocese. All are welcome to seek help from the service, regardless of age, doubts about faith, ethnicity or sexual orientation.

The service is made up of a network of counsellors working across the Diocese. They are all qualified and supervised, and work according to the Ethical Framework of the British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy. Although all our counsellors are Christian, they do not impose their values or beliefs on anyone.

Counselling gives you the chance to talk things through in complete confidence. You might have experienced relationship difficulties, bereavement, depression, sexual issues or stress – but you can talk about anything. The counsellor helps by listening, not by giving advice. Many clients have testified that this has been affirming and exactly what they needed. People sometimes meet a counsellor for one single session, or for a number of sessions.

We do not charge a set fee – we ask clients to contribute to the service as they are able. Help with funding is available, anonymously, to diocesan clergy and their families.

If you want to find out more, you can contact the service’s counselling adviser, Andy Quarmby. All enquiries are treated in confidence. If you wish, you can leave a message at anytime, and Andy will get back to you as soon as possible. Even if you are unsure about counselling, it would still be good to hear from you.
