KeymasterThe Revd Bryony Taylor Curate, St Michael and All Angels Church, Houghton Le Spring, County Durham published a book called ‘More TV Vicar’ in June 2015. The Religious Resources Centre hosted her book launch and, as part of that, Bryony made a playlist for them of relevant clips on YouTube. You can find the Playlist here:
In her book Bryony divides the characters she explores into ‘The Good, the Bad and the Quirky’. She has even created a Top Trumps card for each one! (The book is in the RRC stock if you would like to look at it)..
Perhaps you could share some clips from this playlist with your students and consider the following questions?
Which TV show is this?
What do you think the TV show was trying to do with this character?
What feelings do you have about the portrayal of the vicar in this clip?
How realistic is this as a portrayal of a person in general, let alone a person of faith? If your students were going to devise a Christian character for a contemporary television show (teachers may wish to specifiy the genre: comedy/drama/sci-fi) what might the character:
1 Look/sound like?
2 What kind of personality would they have? What would be their good points/bad points/quirky characteristics be?
3 Looking at what you have suggested for your character – how prominent is your characters’ faith and is that aspect of them important? If the genre of the programme changed how different would their character have to be or could it remain exactly the same?
