The RRC has a fabulous 25 minutes DVD in stock called Dying to Live. It’s an interview to camera piece by North Eastern film maker Gary Wilkinson. In it he allows members of many faiths (all residents of the North East with regional accents to prove it!) to reflect upon what they think happens after someone dies. The faiths are varied, the views are diverse and interesting, some contributors cannot be categorised at all…
…it could be used as straight forward illustration…
…it could be used clip by clip with the visuals off with the listeners tasked to try to decide from what they can hear what they think the key beliefs about the after-life are and what (if any) the faith of the person may be. Once they have come to (and shared?) their conclusions the clips could be viewed again as a whole with the sound and visuals together… what did they get right? Did they get anyone wrong? What can they learn now that is new?
…it could be a springboard into a class based video activity which mimics this project and asks those chosen for interview what their beliefs might be and why they have them… This could be within the class, around the school or amongst people outside of the school community…Gary said of his film… “I tried to get as many different and varied opinions as I could asking South Tyneside people one question: What Happens After We Die ? I do know most people involved…some contributors don’t belong to any group/church, they have formed the opinions through their own life experiences. I think it is an on going story for some of them and maybe 10 years later will have different opinions after certain life experiences, tragedy, death etc… Others do belong to various communities with a more settled opinion on life and where it began and where we are going…. In all tried to show a wide scope of different and varied opinions.”
If you do use this film please do let us know how and with whom and we will pass your comments onto Gary…
