“Northern Ireland inter faith response to anti-Islamic remarks”
In Northern Ireland there has been recent publicity about anti-Islamic remarks made by a local fundamentalist Christian pastor, Pastor James McConnell. McConnell was backed by the First Minister, Peter Robinson.
Several bodies issued statements criticising the remarks and promoting strong inter-religious and intercultural relations, including the Executive of the Northern Ireland Inter-Faith Forum, whose statement is at http://niinterfaithforum.org/. The Revd Dr Inderjit Bhogal, former Leader of the Corrymeela Community and former member of the NI Inter-Faith Forum Executive, also issued a statement which appears on the Inter-Faith Forum website. Members of the Belfast Islamic Centre also issued responses.
Pastor McConnell and the First Minister have both since offered public apologies.
