Godly Play is an imaginative, child-centred approach to the Christian faith and to religious education. It uses stories from scripture and explores in a multi-sensory way all aspects of Christian belief, practice and spirituality. It is based on Montessori techniques and although originally developed for use with children is increasingly being used with people of all ages. Godly Play is about learning on many different levels through playful discovery.
Godly Play North, based at the Anglican Cathedral in Newcastle offers Introductory and Development sessions for adults wishing to learn about Godly Play, as well as running Godly Play events and courses for children. Godly Play was first introduced to the UK 10 years ago and has been generating increasing interest and excitement ever since. It has been used extensively in parishes in Sunday School, all age services and in Baptism and Confirmation preparation. Many schools use Godly Play to help deliver the RE curriculum and have found that it also offers whole child and whole school benefits. Increasingly, Godly Play is being used to enrich adult education and in training for ministry.
As a method which has been tried and tested with children for over 30 years, Godly Play has a real integrity – to use Godly Play you need first of all to experience it for yourself! You can do this at an Introductory session run by Godly Play North. You will then need the relevant story script and materials which can be borrowed from the Resources Centre, or from Godly Play North at the Cathedral.
