Durham Mysteries 2010

(3rd May 2010)

The Durham Mysteries 2010 is an ambitious project which should provide the stimulus for much discussion in the days and weeks to come. Please see their website.

If you can't make the plays themselves you could consider reviving the tradition in your own school or church using Margaret Cooling's little known Ten Minute Miracle Plays for Easter: An active approach to the Bible for today's teachers (we have a copy available at each site and they can be found in the 263.3.3 class section).

We also have lots of other forms of drama and dramatic dialogue that can be used in a variety of contexts - search the online catalogue for more details...

Christian Aid Week 2010

(10th May 2010)

As part of this year's Christian Aid Week, Christian Aid Newcastle have created a display at our Percy Main branch with details of forthcoming events and fun ways to support their work. To accompany the display, they have provided a stack of resources for interested people to take away and these can be found in front of the display boards.

One such event is the Bede's Way Sponsored Walk. Leaving from Monkwearmouth St Peter's on Saturday 12th June, you can either take the 'serious' twelve mile route, or the 'family' four mile route - in either case, you're guarunteed a great day out and to be finished in time for England's debut World Cup Match.
Walkers will need to register, either through the website or via e-mail.

Support Your Local Carlin!

(20th March 2010)
From an e-mail from Paul Heatherington

A North East custom is waning...

It was 1644; the country was ravaged by civil war. Newcastle was Royalist. The Scots, supporting the Parliamentarians, laid siege to Newcastle. People on both sides of the Tyne were starving. One legend has it that help came unexpectedly from a French ship that managed to dock safely at Newcastle Quayside with a cargo of peas. The peas were distributed to the people. Others say a ship, laden with peas, was stranded on the Long Sands at South Shields a fortnight before Easter Day. By salvaging the peas, the locals avoided starvation.

Whatever the truth, for centuries, Passion Sunday has locally been known as "Carlin Sunday" continue reading Paul's article
