For some years now there has been an Orthodox community in Durham, which meets to celebrate the Divine Liturgy principally on Sundays at 10.30 a.m. in the Church of St Mary-the-Less, South Bailey, Durham (on the peninsula, behind the Cathedral). It welcomes members of all the Eastern Orthodox family of Churches (Greek, Russian, Romanian, Serbian, Bulgarian, Georgian, etc.).
Canonically it is under the omophorion of Archbishop Gregorios of Thyateira and Great Britain, the leader of the Greek Orthodox Community in Great Britain, and thus belongs to the Oecumenical Patirarchate. The priest who serves the parish, Fr Andrew Louth, belongs to the Russian Orthodox Diocese of Sourozh, which is part of the Moscow Patriarchate.
The services are mostly in English, but Greek, Slavonic and Romanian are also used. In addition to the Sunday Liturgy, there is (generally) Vespers/Vigil on the last Saturday of the month (but check: see below), and the Divine Liturgy is celebrated on the great feasts of the Church, generally about 10 a.m. In Lent and Holy Week there are more frequent services.
An e-mail message is sent out most weeks with details of services; anyone who wants to receive this message should send their e-mail address to Fr Andrew.
Fr Andrew is also a professor in the Department of Theology & Religion at Durham University, and can be contacted there (Abbey House, Palace Green, DH1 3RS).
