About Us

The Resources Centre is an independent charity. Established in 1974, it is the North East of England’s only specialist library of religious resources. It is ‘one library on two sites’ - Durham and Percy Main in North Shields – and has a comprehensive stock including both practical and academic resources in a variety of media - books, videos, posters, artefacts and CDs.

The Resources Centre has an Anglican foundation but takes pride in its ecumenical and multi-faith approach to religious learning. Since its foundation the Resources Centre has been mainly funded by the ‘St Hild and St Bede Trust’.

The Resources Centre is an equal opportunities employer and was registered in 1996 as a Charity and a Company.

Our Aims

Our main aim is to promote and encourage religious learning by providing resources, information and training to support individuals, schools and churches.

Our Services

loan service: we have a comprehensive collection of over 33,000 resources and an extensive theology collection. Resources include books, videos, CDs, DVDs, slides, posters and box sets of artefacts for individual faiths.

academic theology section: the Resources Centre holds an extensive academic theology library, which embraces a number of collections including Archdeacon Sharp, North East Oecumenical Course (NEOC), Newcastle Board for Ministry and Training and Newcastle Readers Board. Subjects covered include biblical study, philosophy, ethics, church history and biography. The collection is available to all Resources Centre members.

artefacts boxes: the Resources Centre has boxes containing artefacts relating to each of the 6 major faiths. Each box may be borrowed for 4-6 weeks at a cost of £5.00 per box. To avoid disappointment we suggest that you make your reservation several months in advance.

bear's book club: there is a prolific collection of books and videos for children. Bears Book Club provides an opportunity for children to borrow these resources.

books to order: an ordering service is available. Order forms may be obtained from a member of staff. We offer discounted prices whenever possible.

consultancy: appointments may be made with the Director for those members who wish to discuss any aspect of their resourcing needs. Please contact the Durham branch for further details.

newsletter: members receive an annual newsletter providing the latest news from the Resources Centre. If you wish to make a contribution to the newsletter, please submit it to Karenza Passmore in an envelope marked “Newsletter”.

customer computers: in addition to the catalogue-access computer available on-site in Durham, there are three PCs at the Percy Main site. These are available for wordprocessing, spreadsheets, presentations, and access to the internet and our online catalogue - one has a scanner, DVD burner, and the HymnQuest and Visual Liturgy software installed. A printing service and blank media are available at reasonable prices.

godly play: the Resources Centre has a wide range of Godly Play boxes. They can be borrowed for 4-6 weeks for a small fee of £2.50. Booking is recommended in order to avoid disappointment.

requests: if you require something specific you may telephone or email before you visit or check on our online library catalogue.
